Giant porphyry foot. Roman. The stone, red porphyry from Egypt, was a luxury in Roman times and favoured by emperors, e.g. for their sarcophagi. The dedication of model body-parts, including feet, was a common practice In the sanctuaries of healing deities like Asclepius. The original purpose of this unusual object, however, has yet to be firmly established.
